Most Zimbabweans come on the Skilled Worker or Health and Care Worker visa — both need a job offer from a UK-licensed sponsor and lead to settlement after 5 years.
Skilled Worker visa
Requires a job offer from a UK-licensed sponsor, an eligible occupation, English at B2 (CEFR), and a salary of £41,700/year, or the going rate for the role (whichever is higher). Granted for up to 5 years; ILR after 5 years, then citizenship 12 months later.
Health and Care Worker visa — the big route for Zimbabweans
Zimbabwe has long supplied NHS nurses, doctors, and (until recently) care workers. For eligible clinical roles the salary floor is £25,000/year (or £12.82/hour, or the going rate) and holders are exempt from the Immigration Health Surcharge (£1,035 per year per adult) — over £5,000 saved across 5 years.
Important: new overseas sponsorship of social-care workers ended 22 July 2025. Nurses, doctors, and other clinical roles are unaffected — but if a care agency abroad is recruiting you, confirm the current rules before paying anyone.

Where Zimbabweans are settling
Zimbabweans are spread across the UK, often following NHS and care work. Luton, Milton Keynes, Leeds, Birmingham, and the North have large, long-standing communities and far lower costs than London. London (especially the outer boroughs) has the widest job market but the highest rents. Many families pick a town near a sponsoring NHS trust.
Renting as a new arrival
UK landlords want payslips, a credit history, and a previous-landlord reference you won't have yet (average London rent is now about £2,294/month; most towns are far cheaper). What works: start in a room in a shared house via SpareRoom.co.uk, lean on community networks for first rooms, get an employer reference letter, or offer a larger upfront deposit or a UK guarantor service.

If you do settle in London, weigh commute time, school quality (Ofsted), and safety over proximity to the centre. Outer boroughs offer the best value.
High-demand sectors
Healthcare (nurses, doctors, allied health) — the fastest visa route and a deep Zimbabwean tradition in the NHS. IT and engineering, finance and accounting (many Zimbabwean ACCA/CIMA professionals), education (maths/science teachers), and logistics are all in demand. Note: general social-care recruitment from overseas closed in July 2025 — clinical NHS roles are unaffected.
London ranks #8 of 226 cities in Mercer's 2024 Cost of Living survey — dramatically more expensive than Harare across rent, utilities, and groceries. Higher UK wages offset this over time, but the first year is financially intense while you build UK savings and credit from scratch. Choosing a lower-cost town over London makes the biggest single difference.

Monthly budget — family of 4, a typical UK town
Rent (3-bed): £1,300–1,900/month · Council tax: £150–220 · Groceries: £500–800 · Transport: £200–400 · Utilities + internet: £200–350 · Eating out and activities: £200–400.
Rough total: £2,550–4,070/month outside London. London adds 40–70% to rent.
Open a UK bank account early
Many essentials — phone contracts, utilities, tenancy agreements — require a UK account. App-based banks open with just a passport, no UK address needed; high-street banks build the credit history you'll need for a mortgage later.
Moving money abroad? Don’t lose it in the exchange rate.
Banks and high-street transfer services often bury a 3–5% markup in the exchange rate — on top of any upfront fee, and easy to miss because it hides inside a worse rate. On a large transfer — moving your savings across, or sending money home — that quietly costs hundreds to thousands, for nothing.
The mid-market rate is the one you see on Google. We earn a commission if you open a Wise account through our link — it never affects your rate.
Access to the NHS
You have full NHS access — paid for via the IHS (£1,035 per year per adult) up front, or exempt on the Health and Care Worker visa. The GP is the gatekeeper: register with a local surgery as soon as you have an address, and you'll be referred on to specialists from there. Waiting times for elective care can be long, so some take private cover for faster access. NHS dentists are scarce — budget for private dental or join a waiting list early.
State schools — free and generally good
UK state schools are free and open to all children of legal residents. Zimbabwean children, schooled in English with strong academic standards, usually integrate fast. Contact your local council's admissions team for a place; check Ofsted ratings before choosing an area. Grammar schools (free, selective, by 11+ exam) exist in some areas and are popular with academically focused families.
Established and supportive
The UK has one of the largest Zimbabwean diasporas in the world, built up since the early 2000s and concentrated in towns with strong NHS employment. Churches (including many Zimbabwean-led congregations) are central, and city- and profession-specific WhatsApp and Facebook groups — especially among Zimbabwean nurses and care workers — are very active with job leads, housing tips, and day-to-day help. African food shops and Zimbabwean groceries are easy to find in the bigger communities.
Zimbabwe is not a 'listed' country for UK pet travel, so the route is longer — expect a rabies blood test and a waiting period. Plan well ahead and use an experienced pet relocation agent.
An ISO-standard microchip before, or at the same time as, the rabies vaccination.
From an unlisted country, your pet needs the rabies vaccination AND a blood test 30 days later, then a 3-month wait from a successful blood sample before travel. Start very early.
An official veterinary certificate for entry — confirm current paperwork on gov.uk, as it differs from listed-country arrivals.
Pets must enter via an approved route on an approved transport company. An experienced agent is strongly recommended for unlisted-country moves.
