Last updated: June 2026. We keep this guide regularly updated, but immigration rules, fees, and costs change — always confirm the final figures with the official source linked in each section before you rely on them.

Heads up: Immigration rules, tax regulations, and costs change frequently. Always verify critical details with Immigration New Zealand, SARS, SARB, and a licensed adviser before making decisions. Last reviewed: June 2026.
Why is this free?
Because moving is already expensive enough. Good information about something this important shouldn’t cost money to access.
This is the easy one. Take it section by section anyway — the small admin steps (TFN, super, Medicare) still matter. 🌏

New Zealand citizens get a uniquely easy deal — you don't apply for a visa in advance at all.

Special Category Visa (subclass 444)

As an NZ citizen, you're granted a Special Category Visa automatically when you arrive in Australia on your NZ passport — no application, no sponsor, no points test. It lets you live, work, and study in Australia indefinitely. (NZ permanent residents who are not citizens do not get this — they need a standard visa.)

A direct pathway to citizenship

Since 1 July 2023, NZ citizens who have been living in Australia for 4 years or more can apply directly for Australian citizenship without first becoming a permanent resident. This also opened up access to more government services. Check your eligibility once you pass the 4-year mark.

Where New Zealanders settle

Kiwis are everywhere in Australia, but Queensland (Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast) has long been the favourite — warm, affordable, and a short hop home. NSW (Sydney) has the biggest job market; Victoria (Melbourne) and WA (Perth) are strong too. Many move for specific jobs or to be near family already there.

Renting as a new arrival

Australia's rental market is competitive — Sydney median house rent is about AUD $750–815/week for a house, with Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth cheaper. Apply at open inspections with paperwork ready. As an SCV holder with full work rights you're treated much like a local, but bring NZ references and an employment letter. A 4-week bond is standard.

Walk straight into the job market

With immediate, unrestricted work rights, Kiwis can take any job from day one — no sponsorship needed, which makes you an easy hire. NZ qualifications and experience are recognised almost identically. High-demand fields: healthcare, trades and construction, mining/engineering (WA, QLD), IT, and finance. SEEK is the main job board.

Sydney ranks #58 of 226 cities in Mercer's 2024 survey (Brisbane and Perth cheaper). Costs are broadly similar to New Zealand's main cities, but Australian wages are typically higher and the minimum wage is one of the world's highest — most Kiwis find their purchasing power improves, especially outside Sydney.

Open an Australian account before you fly

The big four banks let you open online before arrival, so your salary lands from day one; verify ID at a branch after you land. You'll be auto-enrolled in superannuation once you start work — and your NZ KiwiSaver can, in some cases, be transferred to an Australian super fund under the Trans-Tasman portability arrangement (get advice first).

Moving money abroad? Don’t lose it in the exchange rate.

Banks and high-street transfer services often bury a 3–5% markup in the exchange rate — on top of any upfront fee, and easy to miss because it hides inside a worse rate. On a large transfer — moving your savings across, or sending money home — that quietly costs hundreds to thousands, for nothing.

Medicare from the start

Thanks to the Trans-Tasman Reciprocal Health Care Agreement, New Zealanders can enrol in Medicare for medically necessary care — public hospital treatment and subsidised GP visits — soon after arrival. As an SCV holder living in Australia you have broad access. You still pay a gap fee at many GPs (some bulk-bill for free), and ambulance cover is separate in most states, so many take out private health insurance to top up.

First-week priority: enrol with Medicare at a Services Australia centre and register with a local GP.

Public, Catholic, and independent schools

Australia runs Prep through Year 12 on a January–December calendar — the same as NZ — so the transition is seamless. Public schools are free and catchment-based; Catholic schools charge modest fees; independent schools range to AUD $40,000+/year. Year 12 feeds an ATAR for university, similar to NCEA-to-university entry.

The largest overseas-born group of all

New Zealanders are among the very largest overseas-born groups in Australia — so 'community' barely captures it; Kiwis are woven through every city and workplace. The cultural overlap is near-total, integration is effortless, and the All Blacks–Wallabies rivalry is the main source of friendly tension. You'll find Kiwi food, rugby league/union clubs, and informal networks everywhere.

Good news: New Zealand is a rabies-free 'Group 1' country, so cats and dogs from NZ have the simplest possible path into Australia — generally no quarantine. You still need to meet biosecurity requirements, so confirm the current rules and timing.

📋
Microchip + import permit

An ISO microchip and a valid import permit from the Department of Agriculture, applied for ahead of travel.

💉
Vet checks and treatments

Pre-export vet checks and any required treatments to the Group 1 schedule — much lighter than from rabies-present countries (no RNATT or 180-day wait).

📄
Health certification

An official vet completes the health certification close to departure, to the exact government requirements.

Arrival — usually no quarantine

Cats and dogs from NZ generally enter without quarantine, but confirm the current rules on the official guide before booking.
