It looks like a lot — but you've already taken the hardest step by deciding to go. We'll walk you through it section by section.

Most South Africans come via skilled migration or employer sponsorship. Check whether your occupation is on the skilled lists — it shapes your whole strategy.
Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) — PR
Points-tested permanent visa with no sponsor needed — minimum 65 points to be invited. Submit an Expression of Interest via SkillSelect. Subclass 190 (state-nominated) and 491 (regional) can be easier to be invited for.
Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) — employer-sponsored
If a sponsoring employer wants you, the 482 skips the points test — minimum salary AUD $79,499 minimum salary. It can lead to PR via the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186).

Where South Africans settle
Western Australia (Perth) is the heartland — the closest time zone to SA, a big mining/engineering economy, and the largest, most established SA community. Queensland (Brisbane, Gold Coast) — warm, affordable, growing. NSW (Sydney) — biggest job market, highest costs. Victoria (Melbourne) — culture and slightly lower costs than Sydney.
Renting as a new arrival
Australia's rental market is competitive — Sydney median house rent is about AUD $750–815/week for a house, with Perth, Brisbane, and Adelaide materially cheaper. You apply at open inspections with paperwork ready: passport, visa, employment letter, references. Without local rental history, offer a few months upfront or a strong employer reference. A 4-week bond is standard.

Strong demand, familiar work culture
SA qualifications and experience are widely recognised. High-demand fields: healthcare (nurses, doctors, allied health), mining and engineering (especially WA and QLD), construction and trades, IT, finance and accounting (CA(SA) is well regarded), and education. Many roles sit on the skilled occupation lists that drive 189/190/491 eligibility — check whether yours does.
Sydney ranks #58 of 226 cities in Mercer's 2024 Cost of Living survey (Perth and Brisbane cheaper). Australia is markedly more expensive than SA across housing, groceries, and services — but salaries are far higher and the minimum wage is one of the world's highest, so purchasing power is strong. Perth and Brisbane stretch your money much further than Sydney.

Monthly budget — family of 4, Perth
Rent (3-bed house): AUD $2,600–3,600/month · Groceries $1,000–1,400 · Transport $500–800 · Utilities $300–450 · Private health (required pre-PR) $250–450 · Eating out $300–600. Rough total: AUD $4,950–7,300/month. Sydney adds 20–35%.
Open an Australian account before you fly
The big four banks let you open online from SA, often up to 3 months before arrival, so your salary lands from day one; verify ID at a branch after you land. You'll be auto-enrolled in superannuation (compulsory employer pension) once you start work. On the SA side, plan your SARS tax-residency cessation and SARB allowances (SDA/FIA) before you go.
Moving money abroad? Don’t lose it in the exchange rate.
Banks and high-street transfer services often bury a 3–5% markup in the exchange rate — on top of any upfront fee, and easy to miss because it hides inside a worse rate. On a large transfer — moving your savings across, or sending money home — that quietly costs hundreds to thousands, for nothing.
The mid-market rate is the one you see on Google. We earn a commission if you open a Wise account through our link — it never affects your rate.
No reciprocal Medicare for South Africans
Unlike UK or NZ citizens, South Africa has no Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia — so on a temporary visa you are NOT covered by Medicare and must hold private health insurance (often a visa condition). Once you become a permanent resident or citizen, you enrol in Medicare and get full public cover. Medicare covers most GP visits (some bulk-billing practices are free) and public hospital care, but you usually pay a gap fee.
Public, Catholic, and independent schools
Australia runs Prep through Year 12 on a January–December calendar. Public schools are free for residents and catchment-based; Catholic schools charge modest fees; independent schools range to AUD $40,000+/year. Note: temporary-visa holders may pay public-school fees in some states — check your state's rules. SA children integrate easily. Year 12 feeds an ATAR for university, similar to the NSC.
Large, established, and welcoming
Australia has one of the world's largest South African communities — concentrated in Perth but strong in Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne too. Biltong and boerewors are easy to find, braai culture translates directly, and SA churches, sports clubs, and Facebook groups (Saffas in Perth/Australia) are very active with practical help. For most new arrivals, an existing SA network makes the first months far easier.
Australia's biosecurity is strict. From South Africa, expect rabies testing, an import permit, and a minimum 10-day government quarantine on arrival. Plan 6+ months ahead and use an experienced pet relocation agent.
An ISO microchip and a valid import permit from the Department of Agriculture, applied for well in advance.
A rabies vaccination then a Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre Test (RNATT), with a 180-day wait from a successful test before entry — the longest step, so start early.
Treatments and tests in the months before travel, signed off by an official vet on the exact government schedule.
All cats and dogs enter via Melbourne and complete a minimum 10 days at the Mickleham facility. Book your space early.
