Most Indians come through Express Entry (skilled migration) or by studying first and transitioning to work and PR.
Express Entry โ the main skilled route
Submit a profile and get a CRS score (out of 1,200). Indian IT, engineering, and healthcare professionals are heavily represented. A Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nomination adds +600 points and effectively guarantees an invitation โ target provinces whose streams match your occupation.
Study โ Post-Graduation Work Permit โ PR
The other huge pathway: study โ Post-Graduation Work Permit โ PR. Indian students are the largest group in Canada; Canadian study and work experience significantly raise your CRS score.

Where Indians settle
Ontario (Toronto, Brampton, Mississauga) has the largest Indian community by far โ Brampton is often called 'mini-Punjab'. British Columbia (Surrey, Vancouver) has a huge Punjabi community. Alberta (Calgary, Edmonton) offers lower costs, jobs, and no provincial health wait. The Prairies (Manitoba, Saskatchewan) run PNP streams that can be easier routes to PR.
Renting as a new arrival
Toronto and Vancouver are Canada's most expensive rental markets (a 1-bed often CAD $2,000โ2,700/month); Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and the Prairies are far cheaper. Without a Canadian credit history, landlords may ask for extra references or several months upfront โ a job-offer letter and international bank statements help. Many newcomers use the Indian community network for first rooms.

High-demand sectors
IT and software, engineering, healthcare (nurses, doctors, allied health), skilled trades, finance and accounting, and supply chain are all in demand and feature in category-based Express Entry draws. Get your credentials assessed (ECA via WES) and any professional licence recognised early. Job Bank, LinkedIn, and Indeed are the main boards.
Toronto and Vancouver are expensive by Canadian standards (and far pricier than Indian cities across housing and services), but Calgary, Edmonton, and the Prairies are much more affordable. Canadian salaries and the higher minimum wage offset costs over time, but the first year is intense while you build Canadian savings and credit from scratch.

Open a newcomer bank account
Canada's big banks all offer newcomer packages โ often free everyday banking for a year, plus a path to a credit card without Canadian history (key for building credit). Some let you start the application before you arrive. Moving rupees out is governed by RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (up to USD 250,000 per financial year) โ plan transfers within that limit and keep documentation.
Moving money abroad? Don’t lose it in the exchange rate.
Banks and high-street transfer services often bury a 3–5% markup in the exchange rate — on top of any upfront fee, and easy to miss because it hides inside a worse rate. On a large transfer — moving your savings across, or sending money home — that quietly costs hundreds to thousands, for nothing.
The mid-market rate is the one you see on Google. We earn a commission if you open a Wise account through our link — it never affects your rate.
Provincial public healthcare โ mind the wait
Healthcare is free at the point of use but provincial โ and there's up to 3 months in some provinces. Apply for your provincial health card as soon as you arrive (ServiceOntario, etc.). Provincial plans don't cover dental, vision, or prescription drugs for working-age adults โ employer benefits usually do, so prioritise that when job-hunting. Register with a family doctor early; walk-in clinics fill the gap.
Public schools and French immersion
Public schools are free and provincially run; many newcomer boards have Welcome Centres for grade placement and language assessment. French immersion is widely available and popular for giving children a second official language. Catholic schools are publicly funded in several provinces. Indian children, schooled in English, integrate quickly.
Canada's largest newcomer community
Indians are the largest source of recent permanent residents in Canada, with enormous, vibrant communities in the GTA (especially Brampton) and Surrey, BC. Gurdwaras, temples, and mosques double as community hubs; Indian grocery chains and restaurants are everywhere; and regional/professional WhatsApp and Facebook groups are very active with housing, jobs, and day-to-day help.
Canada's pet import rules are relatively relaxed โ no quarantine for cats and dogs. The main requirement is proof of a current rabies vaccination.
Dogs and cats need a valid rabies vaccination certificate from a licensed vet, identifying the animal and the vaccine. This is the core requirement.
An ISO microchip is recommended for identification and is required by some airlines.
Confirm your airline's pet policy and crate rules. A border official inspects documents on arrival; there is no quarantine for compliant cats and dogs.
