Who we are
Almost Expat is a free relocation information website at almostexpat.com. We provide practical guides for people planning international moves. We are not immigration lawyers, financial advisers, or relocation agents.
What data we collect
We collect very little data. Almost Expat does not require registration or login. We do not sell your data.
Checklist data: Your checklist progress is saved in your own browser’s localStorage — it never leaves your device and we cannot access it.
Route requests: If you submit a route request via the /request-a-route/ page, the data is stored in our WordPress database. If you provide an email address, it is used to send you a notification when the requested toolkit is published, sent via Brevo.
Analytics: We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors use our site (pages visited, time on site, general geographic region). Google Analytics 4 does not record IP addresses. This data is aggregated — we cannot identify individual visitors. You can opt out via the cookie consent banner on your first visit, or using a browser extension. We accepted Google’s Data Processing Terms for this analytics account on 4 June 2026.
Cookies: We use cookies for analytics and to support the cookie consent banner. Essential cookies (e.g. session cookies) are necessary for the site to function. You can control cookie settings in your browser.
Third-party links
Our toolkits contain links to third-party websites (government immigration websites, job boards, property portals, etc.). We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these sites. We encourage you to read their privacy policies.
Affiliate links
Some links on Almost Expat may be affiliate links — meaning we may earn a small commission if you click through and make a purchase or sign up. This never affects the price you pay and does not influence our editorial recommendations. We only link to services we consider genuinely useful for people making international moves. GDPR / Your rights
If you are located in the European Economic Area or UK, you have rights including the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data. New Zealand visitors — Privacy Act 2020
If you are based in New Zealand, the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 applies to how we handle your personal information. This Act is built around 13 Information Privacy Principles (IPPs) that govern the collection, use, storage, and disclosure of personal information. We aim to comply with all 13 IPPs in how we operate this site.
What personal information we hold: If you submit a route request via the /request-a-route/ page, or interact with a feedback widget, we may store your email address and the details you provide. This data is stored in our WordPress database and is used only to respond to your request or improve the site. We do not collect this information unless you voluntarily provide it.
Third-party processors: Two third-party services may process data on our behalf:
- Brevo (transactional email) — delivers notification emails when a route request is submitted. Brevo’s privacy policy is at brevo.com/legal/privacypolicy. No personal data other than email addresses is sent to Brevo.
- Google Analytics 4 — used to understand how visitors use the site. Google Analytics 4 does not record IP addresses. No personally identifiable information is shared. You can opt out via the cookie consent banner on your first visit.
Your rights: You have the right to request access to, and correction of, any personal information we hold about you. Contact us at privacy@almostexpat.com.
Complaints: If you believe your privacy rights under the Privacy Act 2020 have been interfered with, you may contact us first at privacy@almostexpat.com. If the matter is not resolved to your satisfaction, you may lodge a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy occasionally. Changes will be reflected by the “Last updated” date at the top of this page.
