For most Hong Kongers the route is the BN(O) visa — but a Skilled Worker visa is the main alternative if you don't hold BN(O) status.
BN(O) visa — British National (Overseas)
Launched January 2021, the BN(O) route lets Hong Kong BN(O) status holders and their close family live, work, and study in the UK. Two options:
5+1 route: 5 years on the BN(O) visa (first 2.5 years, then renewed for another 2.5), then Indefinite Leave to Remain (settled status), then British citizenship after a further 12 months — about 6 years to citizenship in total.
2+1 route: 2 years 9 months, then ILR — a faster path for those who qualify.
Cost: £193 (2.5-year) or £268 (5-year), per person, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge of £1,035 per year per adult (paid up front for the whole period). Settlement later costs £3,226 per person.
Eligible: BN(O) status holders and their household members — you no longer need to hold a current BN(O) passport, only the status. Adult children of BN(O) holders born on or after 1 July 1997 can now also apply in their own right.
Skilled Worker visa — the main alternative
If you don't hold BN(O) status, the Skilled Worker visa is the usual route. You need a job offer from a UK employer who holds a sponsor licence, in an eligible occupation, paying at least £41,700/year, or the going rate for the role (whichever is higher). It leads to settlement after 5 years. Many HK professionals in finance, law, and tech qualify comfortably.

Where Hong Kongers are settling
London has the largest Cantonese-speaking community — Soho (Chinatown), Acton, Harrow, and Barnet are established HK areas. Strong finance and tech job market and good grammar schools (Sutton, Kingston), but housing costs can shock even Hong Kongers used to high prices.
Manchester is the second-largest HK community — a well-established Chinatown, several Greater Manchester grammar schools, a strong digital/media sector, and much more affordable housing. A popular choice for the balance of city amenities and lower costs.
Birmingham, Reading, and the commuter towns around London also draw HK families wanting grammar-school access without central-London rents.
HK families and UK housing
Hong Kongers often find UK housing surprisingly affordable relative to HK prices — even London undercuts mid-range Hong Kong flats, and average London rent is now about £2,294/month. But UK homes are older, smaller, and often poorly insulated by HK standards: smaller kitchens, thicker walls, central heating rather than air-con, and older building stock.
The rental process as a new arrival needs references and a UK credit history you won't have yet. What works: offer several months' rent up front, get an employer reference letter, or use a UK guarantor service. HSBC Premier customers can sometimes use their HK relationship to help.

London is vast — where you live shapes everything. Most arrivals weigh commute time, school quality (Ofsted ratings), and safety over proximity to the centre.
Job market for BN(O) holders
BN(O) holders have full right to work with no restrictions — you do not need employer sponsorship or to meet the £41,700/year, or the going rate for the role (whichever is higher) Skilled Worker threshold (that applies only to the Skilled Worker route). Cantonese–Mandarin–English trilingualism is a genuine advantage in UK finance, trade, law, and accountancy firms with Asia business.
Strong sectors for HK professionals: financial services and banking (London), international commercial and China-practice law, property and real estate, IT and technology, healthcare (strong demand, if qualified), education (Cantonese Saturday schools, bilingual tutoring), and hospitality (HK-style restaurants are growing across the UK).

Hong Kong ranks #1 of 226 cities in Mercer's 2024 Cost of Living survey — the world's most expensive city for expats — while London ranks #8. On Numbeo's 2026 resident-sourced index London (87.5) actually scores above Hong Kong (75.2) on a basket of goods. In practice, outer-London housing can undercut Hong Kong Island rents in absolute terms, while groceries, transport, and utilities are broadly comparable — so the move is largely a like-for-like cost transition.
Mercer ranks 226 cities weighting expat housing and imported goods. Numbeo is community-reported — treat the index as order-of-magnitude, not precise, and cross-check with the calculator below.

Monthly budget — family of 4, outer London
Rent (3-bed, outer London): £2,200–3,200/month · Council tax: £150–250 · Groceries: £500–800 · Transport (2 adults, travelcards): £300–500 · Utilities + internet: £200–350 · Eating out and activities: £300–500.
Rough total: £3,650–5,600/month. Manchester, Birmingham, and the commuter towns cut rent by 30–45%. Central London adds substantially.
Open a UK bank account early
Many essentials — phone contracts, utilities, tenancy agreements — require a UK account. App-based banks let you open one with just a passport, no UK address needed; high-street banks are better for building credit history and getting mortgage-ready later.
Moving money abroad? Don’t lose it in the exchange rate.
Banks and high-street transfer services often bury a 3–5% markup in the exchange rate — on top of any upfront fee, and easy to miss because it hides inside a worse rate. On a large transfer — moving your savings across, or sending money home — that quietly costs hundreds to thousands, for nothing.
The mid-market rate is the one you see on Google. We earn a commission if you open a Wise account through our link — it never affects your rate.
Access to the NHS on a BN(O) visa
Because you pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (£1,035 per year per adult) up front, BN(O) visa holders have full NHS access from day one — GP, hospital, mental health, and most specialist services, free at the point of use (no co-payment like HK private care).
Key differences from HK: the GP is the gatekeeper — you see a GP first and they refer you on; you can't self-refer to most specialists. Waiting times for elective procedures can be long, so many HK families take out private cover (BUPA, AXA Health, Vitality) for faster specialist access. NHS dentists are hard to find — many practices have closed their NHS lists, so budget for private dental or join a waiting list early.
HK families and the UK school system
HK parents typically place high importance on academic achievement, and the UK offers several routes:
Grammar schools: selective state schools, free, entry by the 11+ exam — very competitive. Grammar areas include Kent, Buckinghamshire, parts of Essex, Surrey, the Wirral, and Sutton (London). Many HK families move specifically to a grammar catchment.
Independent (private) schools: excellent results but expensive — roughly £15,000–40,000/year depending on the school and whether boarding. (Fees vary enormously — get current figures from each school.)
State schools: free and zone-based; your address determines eligibility. Check Ofsted ratings before committing to an area.
A rapidly growing, well-organised community
The BN(O) wave — about 166,300 arrivals since 2021 — has transformed the HK community in Britain: younger, more recently arrived, and well-organised. Community organisations include Hongkongers in Britain (practical settlement support), Hong Kong Watch, the HKB network, and many city-specific groups.
Cultural life: HK-style restaurants and cha chaan teng are opening across the UK, Cantonese groceries are well-stocked in Asian supermarkets, and Saturday Cantonese classes for children are well-established in most cities.
Online: the "UK Hong Kong Expats" Facebook group, the Hongkongers UK subreddit, and city-specific WhatsApp groups are very active with practical, day-to-day help.
The UK has a clear pet travel scheme. From an 'approved country' it's straightforward — the core requirements are a microchip, rabies vaccination, and an animal health certificate. Plan several months ahead.
Your pet must be microchipped before, or at the same time as, the rabies vaccination. An ISO-standard chip is required.
Must be given at least 21 days before travel (dogs, cats, ferrets), with boosters kept up to date.
Required within 10 days of travel, issued by an official vet. This replaced the old EU Pet Passport for most arrivals.
Pets must enter via an approved route on an approved transport company. Dogs also need tapeworm treatment for some routes — check current rules.
