Irish citizens have excellent visa access. A Working Holiday visa is the classic first step; skilled migration and employer sponsorship are the main permanent routes.
Working Holiday visa (subclass 417)
Irish citizens aged 18โ35 can live, work, and travel for up to 12 months, extendable to a 2nd and 3rd year with specified regional work. The classic way to test Australia โ and a common bridge into a sponsored or skilled visa once you have a job.
Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) โ PR
Points-tested, no sponsor needed โ minimum 65 points to be invited. Submit an EOI via SkillSelect. Subclass 190 (state-nominated) and 491 (regional) can be easier to be invited for.
Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) โ employer-sponsored
If a sponsoring employer wants you, the 482 skips the points test โ minimum salary AUD $79,499 minimum salary; can lead to PR via the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186). Many Irish convert from a Working Holiday visa to a 482.

Where the Irish settle
NSW (Sydney) and WA (Perth) have long been Irish strongholds (Perth especially for construction and mining), with big communities in Victoria (Melbourne) and Queensland (Brisbane, Gold Coast) too. The Irish are everywhere โ follow the work, especially in construction, healthcare, and hospitality.
Renting as a new arrival
Competitive market โ Sydney median house rent is about AUD $750โ815/week for a house, other capitals cheaper. Apply at open inspections with paperwork ready: passport, visa, employment letter, references. Many Irish start in a house-share via Facebook groups and the Irish network before renting solo. A 4-week bond is standard.

Strong demand, easy cultural fit
Irish qualifications and experience are well recognised, and the work culture is familiar. Construction and trades (a huge Irish stronghold), healthcare (nurses, doctors, allied health), engineering and mining (WA, QLD), IT, finance, and hospitality are all in demand. Many roles sit on the skilled lists that drive 189/190/491 eligibility. SEEK is the main job board.
Sydney ranks #58 of 226 cities in Mercer's 2024 survey. Costs are broadly comparable to Dublin โ both have expensive housing โ but Australian wages are typically higher and the minimum wage is one of the world's highest, so most Irish find their purchasing power improves, especially outside Sydney.

Open an Australian account before you fly
The big four banks let you open online before arrival, so your salary lands from day one; verify ID at a branch after you land. As an EU citizen there are no currency-control hurdles moving euros out โ just watch the EURโAUD rate and timing. You'll be auto-enrolled in superannuation once you start work.
Moving money abroad? Don’t lose it in the exchange rate.
Banks and high-street transfer services often bury a 3–5% markup in the exchange rate — on top of any upfront fee, and easy to miss because it hides inside a worse rate. On a large transfer — moving your savings across, or sending money home — that quietly costs hundreds to thousands, for nothing.
The mid-market rate is the one you see on Google. We earn a commission if you open a Wise account through our link — it never affects your rate.
Reciprocal Medicare for Irish citizens
Ireland has a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia โ so as an Irish citizen you can enrol in Medicare for medically necessary care (public hospital treatment and subsidised GP visits) soon after arrival. You still pay a gap fee at many GPs (some bulk-bill for free), and ambulance cover is separate in most states, so many take out private health insurance to top up. Permanent residents get full Medicare.
Public, Catholic, and independent schools
Australia runs Prep through Year 12 on a JanuaryโDecember calendar. Public schools are free and catchment-based; Catholic systemic schools (familiar to many Irish families) charge modest fees; independent schools range higher. Irish children integrate seamlessly. Year 12 feeds an ATAR for university, similar to the Leaving Cert points system.
One of the most embedded communities of all
The Irish are woven deep into Australian life โ through history, sport (GAA clubs in every city), pubs, and a steady flow of new arrivals. Irish Australian support networks, county associations, and Facebook groups (Irish in Sydney/Perth/Australia) are very active for housing, jobs, and craic. For most, an existing Irish network makes landing almost effortless.
Australia's biosecurity is strict, but Ireland is an approved (rabies-free) country, so the path for cats and dogs is well-trodden. Expect rabies testing, an import permit, and a minimum 10-day government quarantine. Plan several months ahead and use an experienced agent.
An ISO microchip and a valid import permit from the Department of Agriculture, applied for well in advance.
A rabies vaccination then a Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre Test; a waiting period from a successful test applies before entry. Confirm the current timing on the official guide.
Treatments and tests in the months before travel, signed off by an official vet on the exact government schedule.
All cats and dogs enter via Melbourne and complete a minimum 10 days at the Mickleham facility. Book your space early.
