British citizens have strong access to Australian visas. The Working Holiday visa is the easiest first step; skilled migration and employer sponsorship are the main permanent routes.
Working Holiday visa (subclass 417)
Available to British citizens aged 18–35 — live, work, and travel for up to 12 months, extendable to a 2nd and 3rd year with specified regional work. The classic way to test Australia before committing, and a common bridge into a sponsored or skilled visa once you have a job and a feel for where you want to live.
Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) — permanent residence
A points-tested permanent visa with no employer or state sponsor needed — minimum 65 points to be invited. You submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect and wait for an invitation. Points come from age, English, skilled work experience, and qualifications. Subclass 190 (state-nominated) and 491 (regional) can be easier to be invited for in practice.
Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) — employer-sponsored
If a sponsoring employer wants you, the 482 skips the points test — minimum salary AUD $79,499 minimum salary. It can lead to permanent residence through the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186). Many Brits land a job on a Working Holiday visa, then convert to a 482 or state-nominated skilled visa.

Where Brits are settling
New South Wales (Sydney) — biggest job market, highest salaries, highest costs, world-class harbour city. Victoria (Melbourne) — culture, coffee, sport, and slightly lower costs than Sydney; a long-time favourite with Brits. Queensland (Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast) — warm climate, more affordable, fast-growing. Western Australia (Perth) — closest time zone to the UK (only ~7–8 hrs ahead), strong mining/engineering economy, big and well-established British community. South Australia (Adelaide) — affordable, relaxed, and a common state-nomination route.
Renting as a new arrival
Australia's rental market is competitive — Sydney median house rent is about AUD $750–815/week for a house, with Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth materially cheaper. You apply for rentals at open inspections, often competing with several other applicants, so have your paperwork ready: passport, visa, employment letter, references, and bank statements. Without an Australian rental history, offer a few months upfront or a strong employer reference. Most leases are 6 or 12 months; a 4-week bond is standard and lodged with a state bond authority.

Within each city, suburb choice shapes commute, schools, and lifestyle. A quick orientation for the two biggest Brit destinations.
Strong demand, familiar work culture
British qualifications and experience are widely recognised, and the work culture is broadly familiar. High-demand fields: healthcare (nurses, doctors, allied health), construction and the skilled trades, engineering and mining (especially WA and QLD), IT and tech, education, and accounting/finance. Many roles appear on the skilled occupation lists that drive 189/190/491 eligibility — check whether yours does, as it shapes your whole visa strategy.
London ranks #8 in Mercer's 2024 Cost of Living survey, while Sydney ranks #58 of 226 cities (Melbourne #73, Perth ~#108). Both Mercer and Numbeo place London as 10–20% more expensive than Australian cities on everyday goods — so most Brits find the headline cost of living comparable or slightly lower, with housing the biggest variable. Salaries are generally higher and the minimum wage is one of the world's highest, which lifts everyday purchasing power.
Mercer ranks 226 cities weighting expat housing and imported goods. Cross-check with the calculator below and current rents before budgeting.

Monthly budget — family of 4, Sydney
Rent (3-bed house): AUD $3,200–4,500/month · Groceries: $1,000–1,400 · Transport (car + Opal): $500–800 · Utilities: $300–450 · Private health extras: $200–350 · Eating out and activities: $400–700.
Rough total: AUD $5,600–8,200/month. Melbourne trims 10–20%; Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth cut 20–35%. Australia's high wages offset much of this.
Open an Australian account before you fly
The big four banks let you open an account online from the UK, often up to 3 months before you arrive — so your salary can land from day one. You verify your ID at a branch after arrival. You'll also be auto-enrolled in superannuation (compulsory employer pension, 12% of salary from mid-2025) once you start work — choose a low-fee fund early.
Moving money abroad? Don’t lose it in the exchange rate.
Banks and high-street transfer services often bury a 3–5% markup in the exchange rate — on top of any upfront fee, and easy to miss because it hides inside a worse rate. On a large transfer — moving your savings across, or sending money home — that quietly costs hundreds to thousands, for nothing.
The mid-market rate is the one you see on Google. We earn a commission if you open a Wise account through our link — it never affects your rate.
Medicare and the UK reciprocal agreement
Medicare covers most GP visits, public-hospital treatment, and some specialist care. Unlike the NHS you often pay a gap fee at GPs — some "bulk-billing" practices are free at the point of care, but many charge $30–50 above the Medicare rebate.
Thanks to the UK–Australia agreement you get limited Medicare while you settle; full Medicare at PR. Enrol with Medicare as soon as you arrive (you'll need it for the reciprocal cover), and take out private health insurance for the gaps — it isn't a substitute for cover and excludes ambulance, which is charged separately in most states.
Public, Catholic, and independent schools
Australia runs Prep/Kindergarten through Year 12, on a January–December (Southern Hemisphere) calendar. Public schools are free and catchment-based — your address determines the school. Catholic systemic schools charge modest fees; independent schools range from a few thousand to AUD $40,000+/year. British children integrate easily — the systems are broadly comparable.
Year 12 certificates differ by state (HSC in NSW, VCE in Victoria, etc.) and feed an ATAR for university entry, similar to A-levels. Check MySchool (myschool.edu.au) to compare schools before choosing a suburb.
The easiest cultural landing of any move
With 967,000 (2021 Census) England-born residents — the largest overseas-born group in Australia — you're never far from other Brits. Integration is smoother than almost anywhere else: shared language, familiar humour, and a largely recognisable culture. Pomsinoz.com is the longest-running British expat forum; Facebook groups like "British Expats in Australia" and city-specific groups are very active for practical advice.
You'll notice the differences soon enough — earlier days, an outdoor and sport-centred social life, and a sunnier, more relaxed rhythm. Rugby, cricket, and football all have active British-expat participation, and the Ashes rivalry never gets old.
Australia has strict biosecurity — but the UK is a 'Group 2' approved country, so the path is well-trodden. Expect rabies testing, an import permit, and a minimum 10-day government quarantine on arrival. Plan 6+ months ahead and use an experienced pet relocation agent.
Your pet needs an ISO microchip and a valid import permit from the Department of Agriculture, applied for well in advance (permits take several weeks).
A rabies vaccination followed by a Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre Test (RNATT). There's a 180-day waiting period from a successful RNATT before your pet can enter — this is the longest step, so start early.
A series of treatments and tests in the months before travel, signed off by an official vet on the government's exact schedule. Errors here cause delays or extended quarantine.
All cats and dogs enter via Melbourne and complete a minimum 10 days at the Mickleham post-entry quarantine facility. Book your quarantine space early — places are limited.
