Your South Africa to UK Relocation Toolkit
The UK has a large, long-established South African community, and many South Africans have a UK-born grandparent that opens an easy door. Visas, the NHS, jobs, housing, schools, pets, and the financial exit from SA — all in one place.
It looks like a lot — but you've already taken the hardest step by deciding to go. We'll walk you through it section by section.

Many South Africans qualify for the UK Ancestry visa through a UK-born grandparent — check that first. Otherwise the Skilled Worker and Health and Care Worker visas are the main routes.
UK Ancestry visa — check this first
If you have a grandparent born in the UK (or the Channel Islands/Isle of Man, or pre-1922 Ireland), you can apply for a UK Ancestry visa: 5 years to live and work with full rights and no sponsor, then settlement. For many South Africans this is the simplest, most flexible route — check your family tree before anything else.
Skilled Worker visa
A job offer from a UK-licensed sponsor, an eligible occupation, English at B2 (CEFR) (SA English-medium degrees usually meet it), and a salary of £41,700/year, or the going rate for the role (whichever is higher). Up to 5 years; ILR after 5 years, then citizenship 12 months later.
Health and Care Worker visa
For eligible clinical roles the floor is £25,000/year (or £12.82/hour, or the going rate) and holders are exempt from the IHS (£1,035 per year per adult). SA nurses and doctors are widely recruited. Note: overseas social-care worker sponsorship closed 22 July 2025 — clinical roles unaffected.

Where South Africans settle
London and the Home Counties (Surrey, Hertfordshire) have the largest SA communities, plus strong clusters in Bristol, Manchester, and Edinburgh. SA families often pick commuter towns for schools and space; London has the deepest job market but the highest rents.
Renting as a new arrival
UK landlords want references and a credit history you won't have yet (average London rent is now about £2,294/month; commuter towns are cheaper). Start in a shared house or short let, lean on the SA community network, get an employer reference, or offer a larger deposit or a UK guarantor. Homes are older and smaller than SA equivalents — but security worries simply disappear.

SA families often prioritise schools and space, so the commuter belt and outer boroughs feature heavily.
High-demand sectors
Healthcare (nurses, doctors, allied health), finance and accounting (CA(SA) is highly regarded), IT and engineering, actuarial and insurance, education, and trades. SA professionals are well represented in the City and in NHS trusts. With an Ancestry visa you can work for anyone without sponsorship.
London ranks #8 of 226 cities in Mercer's 2024 survey — far more expensive than Johannesburg or Cape Town across rent, utilities, and groceries. Higher UK wages offset this over time, but the first year is intense while you build UK savings and credit. Commuter towns and the North stretch your money much further than central London.

Monthly budget — family of 4, commuter belt
Rent (3-bed): £1,700–2,500/month · Council tax £180–280 · Groceries £500–800 · Transport (rail commute) £350–600 · Utilities + internet £200–350 · Eating out £250–450. Rough total: £3,180–4,980/month. Central London adds substantially.
Open a UK account early — and plan your SA exit
App-based banks open with just a passport; high-street banks build credit for a mortgage later. On the SA side, plan your SARS cessation of tax residency and SARB allowances (the Single Discretionary Allowance and Foreign Investment Allowance) before you go, and use a forex specialist for large ZAR→GBP transfers.
Moving money abroad? Don’t lose it in the exchange rate.
Banks and high-street transfer services often bury a 3–5% markup in the exchange rate — on top of any upfront fee, and easy to miss because it hides inside a worse rate. On a large transfer — moving your savings across, or sending money home — that quietly costs hundreds to thousands, for nothing.
The mid-market rate is the one you see on Google. We earn a commission if you open a Wise account through our link — it never affects your rate.
Access to the NHS
You have full NHS access — via the IHS (£1,035 per year per adult) up front, exempt on the Health and Care Worker visa, or via the surcharge on an Ancestry visa. Coming from SA medical aid, the big adjustments are that the GP is the gatekeeper (you can't self-refer to specialists) and elective waits can be long — many keep private cover (BUPA, Vitality) for faster access. NHS dentists are scarce.
State, grammar, and independent schools
UK state schools are free and catchment-based. SA children integrate well academically. Grammar schools (free, selective, 11+ exam) are popular with SA families and common in the commuter belt; independent schools charge £15,000–40,000/year. Check Ofsted ratings before choosing where to live — they often drive the decision.
Large and well-established
The UK has one of the world's largest South African communities, woven through London, the Home Counties, and beyond. Biltong and boerewors are easy to find, SA churches and sports clubs (rugby especially) are active, and Facebook groups ('South Africans in the UK') buzz with housing, jobs, and practical advice. For most new arrivals, an existing SA network smooths the first months.
South Africa is not a 'listed' country for UK pet travel, so the route is longer — expect a rabies blood test and a waiting period. Plan ahead and use an experienced agent.
An ISO-standard microchip before, or at the same time as, the rabies vaccination.
From an unlisted country: rabies vaccination, blood test 30 days later, then a 3-month wait from a successful sample before travel. Start very early.
An official veterinary certificate for entry — confirm current paperwork on gov.uk.
Pets must enter via an approved route on an approved transport company. An experienced agent is strongly recommended.
