Heads up: Immigration rules, tax regulations, and costs change frequently. Always verify critical details with Immigration New Zealand, SARS, SARB, and a licensed adviser before making decisions. Last reviewed: June 2026.
Why is this free?
Because moving is already expensive enough. Good information about something this important shouldn’t cost money to access.
Take it one section at a time. A large, established South African community is settled across Canada, especially in the GTA and Calgary. Be reassured by the detail, not scared by it. 🌏

Most South Africans come through Express Entry — and SA's strong English and professional qualifications score well on the CRS.

Express Entry — the main skilled route

Submit a profile and get a CRS score (out of 1,200). SA professionals in healthcare, trades, engineering, and finance score well. A PNP nomination adds +600 points; category draws (healthcare, trades, French) can have lower cut-offs.

An alternative: study → Post-Graduation Work Permit → PR. Canadian study and work experience boost your CRS toward permanent residence.

Where South Africans settle

Ontario (Toronto, GTA) has the largest community; Alberta (Calgary, Edmonton) is a major SA hub — energy/engineering jobs, lower costs, and no provincial health wait; British Columbia (Vancouver) for the climate and outdoors. Many SA families choose Calgary for the balance of jobs, space, and affordability.

Renting as a new arrival

Toronto and Vancouver are expensive (a 1-bed often CAD $2,000–2,700/month); Calgary, Edmonton, and the Prairies are far cheaper. Without a Canadian credit history, landlords may want extra references or a few months upfront — a job-offer letter and SA bank statements help. The SA community network helps with first rooms.

🗺️ Explore Calgary, Canada

Use the map to explore neighbourhoods, distances, and key areas before you arrive.

Rent varies enormously by city. A quick orientation for the biggest SA hubs:

GTA — Mississauga/Oakville (ON)$2,400–3,300Largest community, jobs

High-demand sectors

Healthcare (nurses, doctors, allied health), skilled trades, engineering, finance and accounting (CA(SA) is well regarded), IT, and energy (especially Alberta). Get your credentials assessed (ECA via WES/SAQA) and any licence recognised early. Job Bank, LinkedIn, and Indeed are the main boards.

↗ Job Bank — official Government of Canada jobbank.gc.ca — vacancies and labour-market info by region

Toronto and Vancouver are expensive (and far pricier than SA cities), but Calgary, Edmonton, and the Prairies are much more affordable. Canadian salaries and the higher minimum wage offset costs over time, but the first year is intense while you build Canadian savings and credit from scratch.

Open a newcomer account — and plan your SA exit

Canada's big banks offer newcomer packages — often free everyday banking for a year, plus a credit card without Canadian history. On the SA side, plan your SARS cessation of tax residency and SARB allowances (the Single Discretionary Allowance and Foreign Investment Allowance) before you go, and use a forex specialist for large ZAR→CAD transfers.

Moving money abroad? Don’t lose it in the exchange rate.

Banks and high-street transfer services often bury a 3–5% markup in the exchange rate — on top of any upfront fee, and easy to miss because it hides inside a worse rate. On a large transfer — moving your savings across, or sending money home — that quietly costs hundreds to thousands, for nothing.

Provincial public healthcare — mind the wait

Healthcare is free at the point of use but provincial — with up to 3 months in some provinces. Alberta has no wait, which is one reason many SA families choose Calgary. Coming from SA medical aid, note that provincial plans don't cover dental, vision, or most prescriptions for working-age adults — employer benefits usually do. Register with a family doctor early.

Critical: if you settle in Ontario, BC, or Quebec, buy private health insurance for the waiting period — IRCC advises purchasing within 5 days of arrival.

Public schools and French immersion

Public schools are free and provincially run, with Welcome Centres for newcomers. French immersion is widely available and popular for giving children a second official language. SA children, schooled in English, integrate quickly and adapt well to the less rigid, more flexible Canadian system.

Established and concentrated

South Africans are well-established in Canada, concentrated in the GTA and Alberta (Calgary especially). Biltong and boerewors are available from SA shops, braai culture translates, and SA churches, sports clubs (rugby), and Facebook groups ('South Africans in Canada/Calgary') are very active with housing, jobs, and practical help. For most new arrivals an existing SA network smooths the first months.

Canada's pet import rules are relatively relaxed — no quarantine for cats and dogs. The main requirement is proof of a current rabies vaccination.

💉
Rabies vaccination certificate

Dogs and cats need a valid rabies vaccination certificate from a licensed vet, identifying the animal and the vaccine.

📋
Microchip (recommended)

An ISO microchip is recommended for identification and required by some airlines.

✈️
Airline and arrival

Confirm your airline's pet policy and crate rules. A border official inspects documents on arrival; there is no quarantine for compliant cats and dogs.
