Filipinos reach Canada through Express Entry, caregiver pathways, or study — and most overseas Filipino workers process through the DMW.

Express Entry — the main skilled route

Submit a profile and get a CRS score (out of 1,200). Filipino professionals in healthcare, trades, and IT are heavily represented. A PNP nomination adds +600 points; category draws (healthcare, trades) can have lower cut-offs.

Caregiver pathways

Canada runs dedicated home care worker immigration pathways that have long been a major route for Filipinos — offering permanent-residence options for child-care and home-support workers with a job offer. Streams and intake caps change, so check the current programs before committing to an agency.

DMW / OEC clearance

As an Overseas Filipino Worker you must process your deployment through the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and obtain an Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC). Use only DMW-licensed agencies and verify your employer to avoid illegal recruitment.

Where Filipinos settle

Manitoba (Winnipeg) has the highest Filipino concentration of any province and a famously welcoming PNP; Ontario (Toronto), Alberta (Calgary, Edmonton — no health wait), and British Columbia (Vancouver) all have huge communities. Wherever you land, a strong Filipino network is usually nearby.

Renting as a new arrival

Toronto and Vancouver are expensive (a 1-bed often CAD $2,000–2,700/month); Winnipeg, Calgary, and the Prairies are far cheaper. Without a Canadian credit history, landlords may want extra references or a few months upfront. The Filipino community network is invaluable for first rooms and live-in arrangements for caregivers.

Use the map to explore neighbourhoods, distances, and key areas before you arrive.

Rent varies enormously by city. A quick orientation for the biggest Filipino-community hubs:

AreaRent (2-3 bed)Notes
Winnipeg (MB)$1,500–2,200Highest Filipino concentration, cheapest
Calgary / Edmonton (AB)$1,900–2,700Jobs, affordable, no health wait
Toronto / GTA (ON)$2,400–3,200Largest job market
Vancouver (BC)$3,000–4,000Large community, priciest

High-demand sectors

Healthcare (nurses, care aides, allied health), caregiving and home support, skilled trades, hospitality and food, manufacturing, and IT and accounting. Many feature in Express Entry category draws and PNP streams. Get your credentials assessed (ECA) and any licence recognised early. Job Bank, LinkedIn, and Indeed are the main boards.

Toronto and Vancouver are expensive (and far pricier than Manila), but Winnipeg, Calgary, and the Prairies are much more affordable. Canadian wages allow meaningful remittances home, but the first year is intense while you build Canadian savings and credit from scratch.

Open a newcomer account and set up remittances

Canada's big banks offer newcomer packages — often free everyday banking for a year, plus a credit card without Canadian history (key for building credit). For sending money home, compare Wise and specialist remittance services against bank rates — small differences add up over years of monthly remittances.

Moving money abroad? Don’t lose it in the exchange rate.

Banks and high-street transfer services often bury a 3–5% markup in the exchange rate — on top of any upfront fee, and easy to miss because it hides inside a worse rate. On a large transfer — moving your savings across, or sending money home — that quietly costs hundreds to thousands, for nothing.

Provincial public healthcare — mind the wait

Healthcare is free at the point of use but provincial — with up to 3 months in some provinces. Manitoba and Alberta (top Filipino destinations) generally cover you quickly. Apply for your provincial health card as soon as you arrive. Provincial plans don't cover dental, vision, or prescriptions for working-age adults — employer benefits usually do. Register with a family doctor early.

Critical: if you settle in Ontario, BC, or Quebec, buy private health insurance for the waiting period — IRCC advises purchasing within 5 days of arrival.

Public schools and French immersion

Public schools are free and provincially run, with Welcome Centres for newcomers. French immersion is widely available. Filipino children, schooled in English, integrate quickly. Catholic schools are publicly funded in several provinces — a familiar option for many Filipino families.

One of Canada's largest communities

Filipinos are one of Canada's largest and most settled communities — Winnipeg, Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver especially. Catholic parishes are central, Filipino grocery stores and restaurants are everywhere, and Filipino associations and Facebook groups are extremely active with job leads, housing, and welcome support. New arrivals are rarely on their own for long.

Canada's pet import rules are relatively relaxed — no quarantine for cats and dogs. The main requirement is proof of a current rabies vaccination.

💉
Rabies vaccination certificate

Dogs and cats need a valid rabies vaccination certificate from a licensed vet, identifying the animal and the vaccine.

📋
Microchip (recommended)

An ISO microchip is recommended for identification and required by some airlines.

✈️
Airline and arrival

Confirm your airline's pet policy and crate rules. A border official inspects documents on arrival; there is no quarantine for compliant cats and dogs.
