UAE residence is tied to your job. The big draw: 0% personal income tax — your full salary is yours.
Employer-sponsored work visa
Your residence is tied to your job (or a Golden Visa). Your employer sponsors your residence visa and Emirates ID; you'll complete a medical test (blood test and chest X-ray) on arrival. Get a signed contract and issued visa before resigning at home, and verify the employer is genuine.
Golden Visa — longer-term residence
If you're a high earner, investor, entrepreneur, or in a qualifying skilled profession, the 5- or 10-year Golden Visa offers residence not tied to a single employer — worth checking if you qualify, as it gives far more stability.
Where Pakistanis work
Dubai has the largest opportunity and community — business, trade, construction, finance, logistics, and IT. Abu Dhabi is strong in oil & gas, government, and construction. Sharjah is far more affordable, has a very large Pakistani population, and many commute to Dubai. A large Pakistani community and mosques are everywhere.
Where you'll live
Some roles include accommodation or a housing allowance — confirm in your contract. Otherwise Dubai rents are high (a studio often AED 35,000–55,000/year, paid in 1–4 cheques); Sharjah is much cheaper and the most popular base for Pakistani families, with an easy commute to Dubai. Shared apartments are common for the first stint.
High-demand sectors
Construction and engineering, business, trade and logistics, finance and accounting, IT, healthcare, retail and hospitality, and drivers and skilled labour. Pakistanis are heavily represented across all levels. Bayt.com, GulfTalent, LinkedIn, and Dubizzle Jobs are the main boards; verify any agency and never pay large upfront 'placement' fees.
The UAE can be expensive — but with 0% personal income tax and (often) an accommodation allowance, take-home stretches much further than the headline salary. The dirham is pegged at AED 3.6725 per USD (fixed peg), and the Pakistani rupee's volatility makes UAE earnings especially valuable when converted. Living in Sharjah and commuting is the classic way to save.

💰 Monthly Budget Estimator

Monthly budget — single worker, Sharjah/Dubai
Accommodation (shared/studio, Sharjah): AED 2,000–3,500/month · Groceries 600–1,000 · Transport 300–700 · Utilities + internet 250–450 · Phone 100–200 · Eating out 300–600. Rough total: AED 3,550–6,450/month. An accommodation allowance changes the maths entirely.
Banking and remittances
Open a UAE bank account once you have your Emirates ID and residence visa (Emirates NBD, ADCB, Mashreq, FAB are common). For sending money to Pakistan, the Roshan Digital Account (RDA) lets you remit at official rates, and exchange houses (Al Ansari, LuLu) and Wise are competitive — compare rates. With 0% personal income tax, disciplined saving matters; understand your End of Service Gratuity too.
Moving money abroad? Don’t lose it in the exchange rate.
Banks and high-street transfer services often bury a 3–5% markup in the exchange rate — on top of any upfront fee, and easy to miss because it hides inside a worse rate. On a large transfer — moving your savings across, or sending money home — that quietly costs hundreds to thousands, for nothing.
The mid-market rate is the one you see on Google. We earn a commission if you open a Wise account through our link — it never affects your rate.
Employer-provided insurance
Healthcare is excellent but private — there's no free public system for expats, and health insurance is mandatory, employer-provided. Your employer must cover you in Dubai and Abu Dhabi; you typically arrange and pay for dependants' cover. Check the network, co-pays, and maternity/chronic-condition cover before accepting a job.
Private schools — plan for the fees
There's no free public schooling for expats — all expat children attend private schools, fees roughly AED 15,000–70,000+/year by curriculum (British, American, IB, or Pakistani/Federal Board curriculum schools all exist). Some employers offer an education allowance — ask. Dubai schools are rated by KHDA, Abu Dhabi by ADEK.
One of the largest of all
Pakistanis are among the very largest communities in the UAE — well over a million strong. Mosques, Pakistani restaurants and grocery stores, and community/regional associations are everywhere, especially in Sharjah and the older Dubai districts. WhatsApp and Facebook groups are very active with jobs, housing, and day-to-day help, and family or hometown contacts already in the UAE make landing far easier.
The UAE allows pet cats and dogs with the right paperwork and no quarantine. You'll need an import permit, microchip, and up-to-date vaccinations.
Apply for an import permit from the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) before travel.
An ISO microchip, a current rabies vaccination, and other required vaccinations, with a recent vet health certificate.
Pets clear at the airport with the permit and paperwork — no quarantine for compliant cats and dogs. Confirm airline crate rules.
