Most Nigerians come through Express Entry (skilled migration) or by studying first and transitioning to work and PR.
Express Entry — the main skilled route
Submit a profile and get a CRS score (out of 1,200). Nigerian professionals are a top source of Canadian PR. A PNP nomination adds +600 points; French ability unlocks lower-cut-off category draws (a real edge for many).
Study → Post-Graduation Work Permit → PR
A major pathway: study → Post-Graduation Work Permit → PR. Canadian study and work experience significantly raise your CRS score.

Where Nigerians settle
Ontario (Toronto, Brampton, Ottawa) has the biggest community; Alberta (Calgary, Edmonton) offers jobs, lower costs, and no provincial health wait; Manitoba (Winnipeg) and Saskatchewan run welcoming PNP streams and are very affordable; Nova Scotia is growing fast. Many target Prairie provinces for an easier, cheaper route to PR.
Renting as a new arrival
Toronto and Vancouver are expensive (a 1-bed often CAD $2,000–2,700/month); Calgary, Winnipeg, and the Prairies are far cheaper. Without a Canadian credit history, landlords may want extra references or a few months upfront — a job-offer letter and bank statements help. The Nigerian community network is invaluable for first rooms.

High-demand sectors
Healthcare (nurses, doctors, allied health), IT and software, engineering, finance and accounting (ACCA/ICAN professionals are well regarded), skilled trades, and supply chain all feature in Express Entry category draws. Get your credentials assessed (ECA via WES) and any licence recognised early. Job Bank, LinkedIn, and Indeed are the main boards.
Toronto and Vancouver are expensive (and far pricier than Lagos), but Calgary, Winnipeg, and the Prairies are much more affordable. Canadian salaries and the higher minimum wage offset costs over time, but the first year is intense while you build Canadian savings and credit from scratch.

Monthly budget — family of 4, major city
Rent (2-3 bed): CAD $2,000–3,000/month · Groceries $900–1,300 · Transport $300–600 · Utilities + internet $250–400 · Phone $100–200 · Eating out $250–450. Rough total: CAD $3,800–5,950/month. The Prairies trim 25–40%.
Open a newcomer bank account
Canada's big banks offer newcomer packages — often free everyday banking for a year, plus a credit card without Canadian history (key for building credit). Moving money out of Nigeria is constrained by CBN rules and naira volatility — plan transfers in stages, keep documentation, and budget proof-of-funds for Express Entry.
Moving money abroad? Don’t lose it in the exchange rate.
Banks and high-street transfer services often bury a 3–5% markup in the exchange rate — on top of any upfront fee, and easy to miss because it hides inside a worse rate. On a large transfer — moving your savings across, or sending money home — that quietly costs hundreds to thousands, for nothing.
The mid-market rate is the one you see on Google. We earn a commission if you open a Wise account through our link — it never affects your rate.
Provincial public healthcare — mind the wait
Healthcare is free at the point of use but provincial — with up to 3 months in some provinces. Apply for your provincial health card as soon as you arrive. Provincial plans don't cover dental, vision, or prescriptions for working-age adults — employer benefits usually do, so prioritise that when job-hunting. Register with a family doctor early; walk-in clinics fill the gap.
Public schools and French immersion
Public schools are free and provincially run, with Welcome Centres for grade placement and language support. French immersion is widely available and gives children a second official language. Nigerian children, schooled in English, integrate quickly and often ahead in maths and sciences.
Large and fast-growing
Nigerians are among the fastest-growing communities in Canada, concentrated in the GTA, Calgary, Winnipeg, and Halifax. Churches (RCCG and many others) are central, African and Nigerian grocery stores are easy to find, and profession- and city-specific WhatsApp/Facebook groups are very active with housing, jobs, and day-to-day help.
Canada's pet import rules are relatively relaxed — no quarantine for cats and dogs. The main requirement is proof of a current rabies vaccination.
Dogs and cats need a valid rabies vaccination certificate from a licensed vet, identifying the animal and the vaccine.
An ISO microchip is recommended for identification and required by some airlines.
Confirm your airline's pet policy and crate rules. A border official inspects documents on arrival; there is no quarantine for compliant cats and dogs.
