Mexicans have a useful extra route via the Canada–US–Mexico trade agreement, alongside Express Entry. As a visa-exempt national you can also visit on an eTA to scope things out first.
CUSMA work permit — for eligible professionals
Under the CUSMA (formerly NAFTA) agreement, Mexican citizens in certain listed professions can get a work permit with a Canadian job offer without the usual labour-market test — a faster, simpler route than the general work-permit stream. Check whether your profession is on the list.
Express Entry — the main skilled route
Submit a profile and get a CRS score (out of 1,200). A PNP nomination adds +600 points. French ability unlocks lower-cut-off category draws (and is a natural second language for many Spanish speakers to add).
⚠ Figures marked here change frequently — confirm the current amount with the official source before relying.
Where Mexicans settle
Ontario (Toronto) and Quebec (Montreal) have the biggest communities — Montreal's French/Latin feel appeals to many. British Columbia (Vancouver), Alberta (Calgary) for energy and no health wait, and the Prairies (welcoming PNP streams, very affordable) round out the popular choices.
Renting as a new arrival
Toronto and Vancouver are expensive (a 1-bed often CAD $2,000–2,700/month); Montreal, Calgary, and the Prairies are far cheaper. Without a Canadian credit history, landlords may want extra references or a few months upfront — a job-offer letter and bank statements help. Most leases are 12 months.

Rent varies enormously by city. A quick orientation:
High-demand sectors
Engineering, IT and software, healthcare, skilled trades, agriculture and food processing (the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program is a major Mexico–Canada channel), and bilingual/trade roles with US-Mexico business. Get credentials assessed (ECA) and licences recognised. Job Bank, LinkedIn, and Indeed are the main boards.
Toronto and Vancouver are expensive (and far pricier than Mexican cities), but Montreal, Calgary, and the Prairies are much more affordable. Canadian salaries and the higher minimum wage offset costs over time, but expect to rebuild credit from scratch in year one.

Monthly budget — family of 4, major city
Rent (2-3 bed): CAD $2,000–3,000/month · Groceries $900–1,300 · Transport $300–600 · Utilities + internet $250–400 · Phone $100–200 · Eating out $250–450. Rough total: CAD $3,800–5,950/month. Montreal and the Prairies are cheapest.
Open a newcomer bank account
Canada's big banks offer newcomer packages — often free everyday banking for a year, plus a credit card without Canadian history (key for building credit). Plan your MXN→CAD transfers around the exchange rate and timing, and keep documentation for larger moves.
Moving money abroad? Don’t lose it in the exchange rate.
Banks and high-street transfer services often bury a 3–5% markup in the exchange rate — on top of any upfront fee, and easy to miss because it hides inside a worse rate. On a large transfer — moving your savings across, or sending money home — that quietly costs hundreds to thousands, for nothing.
The mid-market rate is the one you see on Google. We earn a commission if you open a Wise account through our link — it never affects your rate.
Provincial public healthcare — mind the wait
Healthcare is free at the point of use but provincial — with up to 3 months in some provinces. Apply for your provincial health card as soon as you arrive. Provincial plans don't cover dental, vision, or prescriptions for working-age adults — employer benefits usually do, so prioritise that when job-hunting. Register with a family doctor early.
Public schools and French immersion
Public schools are free and provincially run, with Welcome Centres and ESL/French support for newcomers. French immersion is widely available — and in Quebec, schooling is primarily in French. Mexican children adapt well; bilingual (Spanish/English/French) ability is an asset.
Growing and warm
The Mexican community is growing quickly, with hubs in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and Calgary. Latin American grocery stores, restaurants, and cultural festivals are easy to find in the bigger cities, and Spanish-speaking community and professional networks plus Facebook groups are very active with housing, jobs, and day-to-day help.
Canada's pet import rules are relatively relaxed — no quarantine for cats and dogs. The main requirement is proof of a current rabies vaccination.
Dogs and cats need a valid rabies vaccination certificate from a licensed vet, identifying the animal and the vaccine.
An ISO microchip is recommended for identification and required by some airlines.
Confirm your airline's pet policy and crate rules. A border official inspects documents on arrival; there is no quarantine for compliant cats and dogs.
