India is the UK's largest source of skilled workers and students. Most people come on the Skilled Worker visa, the Graduate route after study, or the Health and Care Worker visa for NHS roles.
Skilled Worker visa โ the main route
Requires a job offer from a UK-licensed sponsor, an eligible occupation, English at B2 (CEFR), and a salary of ยฃ41,700/year, or the going rate for the role (whichever is higher). Indian IT, engineering, and finance professionals make up the largest overseas skilled workforce in the UK. Granted for up to 5 years; ILR after 5 years, then citizenship 12 months later.
Graduate route โ after a UK degree
If you study in the UK, the Graduate route lets you stay and work (or look for work) with no job offer needed for 2 years (3 years for PhD). It's the most common bridge from a UK master's into a Skilled Worker job. Watch the timeline closely โ many graduates switch to a Skilled Worker visa before the Graduate route ends.
Health and Care Worker visa โ for NHS roles
For eligible clinical roles, a lower salary floor of ยฃ25,000/year (or ยฃ12.82/hour, or the going rate) applies, and holders are exempt from the Immigration Health Surcharge (ยฃ1,035 per year per adult) โ a saving of over ยฃ5,000 across a 5-year visa. Indian nurses and doctors are recruited in large numbers via this route.

Where Indians are settling
London has the largest Indian community โ Harrow, Wembley, and Southall (Punjabi), Ilford and Newham (East), and Hounslow are long-established hubs. Most jobs, highest salaries, highest costs.
Leicester has the UK's highest concentration of Indian-origin residents โ over a third of the city โ with a famous Golden Mile, temples, and a deep community network, at a fraction of London's costs.
Birmingham, Manchester, and the IT corridors (Reading, Cambridge) also draw Indian professionals, especially in tech and engineering, with strong communities and far lower rents than London.
Renting as a new arrival
UK landlords want payslips, a credit history, and a previous-landlord reference you won't have on arrival (average London rent is now about ยฃ2,294/month). What works: start in a room in a shared house via SpareRoom.co.uk โ Indian community networks are invaluable for first rooms โ get an employer reference letter, or offer a larger upfront deposit or a UK guarantor service in place of a credit history.

Use the map to explore neighbourhoods, distances, and key areas before you arrive.

London is vast โ where you live shapes everything. Most arrivals weigh commute time, school quality (Ofsted ratings), and safety over proximity to the centre.
High-demand sectors
IT and software engineering โ London, Manchester, and remote; Indian tech professionals are the UK's largest overseas tech workforce. Healthcare (nurses, doctors, pharmacists, allied health) โ critical shortage and the fastest visa route. Finance and accounting โ ICAI-qualified chartered accountants are well regarded. Engineering (civil, mechanical, electrical). Teaching โ shortages in maths, science, and computing.
New Delhi ranks #165 of 226 cities in Mercer's 2024 Cost of Living survey โ one of the cheapest globally โ while London ranks #8, roughly four times more expensive than Delhi on a basket of everyday goods. Rent is where the jump is sharpest: Delhi rents are very low by UK standards. Higher UK wages offset this over time, but the first year is financially intense while you build UK savings and credit from scratch.

Monthly budget โ family of 4, outer London
Rent (3-bed, outer London): ยฃ1,900โ2,700/month ยท Council tax: ยฃ150โ250 ยท Groceries: ยฃ500โ800 ยท Transport (2 adults, travelcards): ยฃ300โ500 ยท Utilities + internet: ยฃ200โ350 ยท Eating out and activities: ยฃ250โ450.
Rough total: ยฃ3,300โ5,050/month. A shared-house room while you settle cuts this dramatically for the first year. Leicester, Birmingham, and Manchester cut rent by 30โ45%.
Open a UK bank account early
Many essentials โ phone contracts, utilities, tenancy agreements โ require a UK account. App-based banks open with just a passport, no UK address needed; high-street banks build credit history for mortgages later. Moving rupees out is subject to RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (currently up to USD 250,000 per financial year) โ plan transfers within that limit and keep documentation.
Moving money abroad? Don’t lose it in the exchange rate.
Banks and high-street transfer services often bury a 3–5% markup in the exchange rate — on top of any upfront fee, and easy to miss because it hides inside a worse rate. On a large transfer — moving your savings across, or sending money home — that quietly costs hundreds to thousands, for nothing.
The mid-market rate is the one you see on Google. We earn a commission if you open a Wise account through our link — it never affects your rate.
Access to the NHS
Because you pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (ยฃ1,035 per year per adult) up front โ or are exempt on the Health and Care Worker visa โ you have full NHS access: GP, hospital, mental health, and most specialist services, free at the point of use.
Key differences from Indian private care: the GP is the gatekeeper โ you see a GP first and they refer you on; you can't self-refer to most specialists. Waiting times for elective procedures can be long, so some families take private cover (BUPA, AXA Health, Vitality) for faster specialist access. NHS dentists are hard to find โ budget for private dental or join a waiting list early.
Indian children in UK schools
Indian children from English-medium schools usually integrate very quickly โ often ahead in maths and sciences, and the UK curriculum is broadly similar to CBSE for core subjects. Contact your local council's admissions team for a state-school place (free, zone-based).
Grammar schools (free, selective, by 11+ exam) are available in areas like Kent, Buckinghamshire, Sutton, and parts of the Midlands, and are very popular with academically focused Indian families. Supplementary language schools (Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil, Punjabi) run through temples and cultural organisations in areas with large communities.
The UK's largest migrant community
With 920,000 (2021 Census) India-born residents, the Indian community is the UK's largest and one of its most economically successful and culturally vibrant โ built since the 1950s and diverse across religion (Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Christian, Jain) and language (Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil, Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Malayalam โ all with active UK communities).
Cultural life: Diwali, Vaisakhi, Holi, and Eid are celebrated widely, with major public events in Leicester, London, and the Midlands. Temples, gurdwaras, and mosques double as community hubs. Food and groceries are everywhere โ every major city has Indian supermarkets and restaurants. Networks: profession- and region-specific WhatsApp and Facebook groups are very active with practical, day-to-day help.
India is not currently a 'listed' country for UK pet travel, so the route is longer โ expect a rabies blood test and a waiting period. Plan well ahead and use an experienced pet relocation agent.
Your pet must be microchipped (ISO standard) before, or at the same time as, the rabies vaccination.
From an unlisted country like India, your pet needs the rabies vaccination AND a blood test 30 days later, then a wait of 3 months from the date of a successful blood sample before travel. Start very early.
An official veterinary certificate is required for entry; the paperwork differs from listed-country arrivals โ confirm current requirements on gov.uk.
Pets must enter via an approved route on an approved transport company. An experienced pet relocation agent is strongly recommended for unlisted-country moves.
