New Zealand uses a points-based and employer-sponsored system. Most Hong Kongers qualify under the Skilled Migrant Category, Green List, or Accredited Employer Work Visa.
Skilled Migrant Category (SMC)
NZ's points-based resident visa. Requires 6 points, earned by being paid at or above the median wage of NZD $35.00/hour. No ballot — meeting the threshold triggers processing.
Green List — fast-track to residence
If your occupation is on the Green List (around 205 occupations), you bypass the standard SMC threshold. Tier 1 is straight to residence; Tier 2 is work-to-residence after 24 months. HK professionals in healthcare, engineering, and IT are well represented.
Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV)
The main work-visa pathway — your employer must be INZ-accredited. Valid up to 5 years; can bridge to SMC or Green List work-to-residence.

High-demand sectors
Healthcare (nurses, doctors, allied health) and engineering/construction, ICT and software, and teaching are all on the Green List Tier 1. Finance and accounting are in demand too. Publicly funded healthcare is available to holders of work visas of 2 years or longer, on the same terms as residents. GP visits are subsidised but fees are set by each practice — budget NZD $20–60 for an enrolled adult. ACC covers injury (not illness) treatment from day one, automatically for everyone in NZ, including visitors — a genuinely valuable safety net. Zone-based state schools
NZ schools run Year 1–13 on a January–December calendar. State schools are free and zone-based — your address determines eligibility, so check zones before signing a lease. Integrated (Catholic/character) schools charge small fees; private schools NZD $15,000–30,000/year. Review ERO reports before choosing an area.
