Germans have excellent access — a working-holiday visa is the easy first step, and Express Entry is the main permanent route.
International Experience Canada (IEC) — Working Holiday
German citizens (typically 18–35) can get an IEC Working Holiday permit to live and work in Canada for up to 2 years with no employer needed — the classic way to test Canada and a common bridge into a skilled visa. Quotas apply, so enter the pool early.
Express Entry — the main skilled route
Submit a profile and get a CRS score (out of 1,200). German engineering, skilled trades, and IT qualifications are highly regarded. A PNP nomination adds +600 points; French ability (common among Germans) unlocks lower-cut-off category draws.
⚠ Figures marked here change frequently — confirm the current amount with the official source before relying.
Where Germans settle
Ontario (Toronto, Ottawa, Waterloo) for tech and finance; British Columbia (Vancouver, Victoria) for the outdoors and milder climate; Alberta (Calgary) for energy/engineering, lower costs, and no provincial health wait; Quebec (Montreal) if you value French and European feel. Smaller cities (Halifax, Kitchener) are popular with German professionals for liveability.
Renting as a new arrival
Toronto and Vancouver are expensive (a 1-bed often CAD $2,000–2,700/month); Calgary, Ottawa, and the Prairies are far cheaper. Without a Canadian credit history, landlords may want extra references or a few months upfront — a job-offer letter and German bank statements help. Most leases are 12 months.

Rent varies enormously by city. A quick orientation:
High-demand sectors
Engineering and skilled trades (German credentials are gold standard), IT and software, healthcare, renewables and manufacturing, and finance. Get your credentials assessed (ECA) and trades recognised via provincial bodies. Job Bank, LinkedIn, and Indeed are the main boards; German-speaking firms and the Canadian-German chambers of commerce are useful networks.
Toronto and Vancouver are expensive, but broadly comparable to Munich or Frankfurt on housing; Calgary, Ottawa, and Montreal are notably cheaper. Canadian salaries are competitive and the lifestyle — space, nature, work-life balance in many sectors — is the draw. Expect to rebuild credit from scratch in year one.

Monthly budget — family of 4, major city
Rent (2-3 bed): CAD $2,200–3,400/month · Groceries $900–1,300 · Transport $300–600 · Utilities + internet $250–400 · Phone $100–200 · Eating out $300–500. Rough total: CAD $4,050–6,400/month. Toronto/Vancouver at the top; Calgary and Montreal trim 20–35%.
Open a newcomer bank account
Canada's big banks offer newcomer packages — often free everyday banking for a year, plus a credit card without Canadian history (key for building credit). As an EU citizen there are no currency-control hurdles moving euros out — just watch the EUR→CAD rate and timing.
Moving money abroad? Don’t lose it in the exchange rate.
Banks and high-street transfer services often bury a 3–5% markup in the exchange rate — on top of any upfront fee, and easy to miss because it hides inside a worse rate. On a large transfer — moving your savings across, or sending money home — that quietly costs hundreds to thousands, for nothing.
The mid-market rate is the one you see on Google. We earn a commission if you open a Wise account through our link — it never affects your rate.
Provincial public healthcare — mind the wait
Healthcare is free at the point of use but provincial — with up to 3 months in some provinces. Apply for your provincial health card as soon as you arrive. Coming from Germany's system, note that provincial plans don't cover dental, vision, or most prescriptions for working-age adults — employer benefits usually do, so factor that into job choices. Register with a family doctor early.
Public schools and French immersion
Public schools are free and provincially run, with Welcome Centres for newcomers. French immersion is popular with European families wanting a bilingual education. The system is less tracked than German Gymnasien — more flexible, with university decided later. German Saturday/Samstagsschule programmes exist in larger cities.
Long-established and professional
German-Canadians are one of the country's older and larger heritage communities, with active German clubs, Christmas markets, and cultural associations in most cities (Kitchener-Waterloo's Oktoberfest is the biggest outside Munich). For recent arrivals, German-speaking professional networks, the chambers of commerce, and expat Facebook groups are the fastest route to jobs, housing, and friends.
Canada's pet import rules are relatively relaxed — no quarantine for cats and dogs. The main requirement is proof of a current rabies vaccination.
Dogs and cats need a valid rabies vaccination certificate from a licensed vet, identifying the animal and the vaccine.
Your EU pet passport documents the microchip and vaccinations; an ISO microchip is recommended and required by some airlines.
Confirm your airline's pet policy and crate rules. A border official inspects documents on arrival; there is no quarantine for compliant cats and dogs.
