Australians have strong access to UK visas — and many qualify for the UK Ancestry visa through a grandparent born in the UK, which is one of the best routes available.
UK Ancestry visa — check this first
If you have a grandparent born in the UK (or in some cases the Channel Islands/Isle of Man, or pre-1922 Ireland), you can apply for a UK Ancestry visa to live and work in the UK for 5 years with full work rights and no sponsor — then apply for settlement. For many Australians this is the simplest and most flexible route, so check your family tree before anything else.
Youth Mobility Scheme — under 35
Australian citizens aged 18–35 can apply for the Youth Mobility Scheme visa to live and work in the UK for up to 3 years, with no sponsor needed. A popular first step — and you can switch to another visa from within the UK later.
Skilled Worker visa
For a job offer from a UK-licensed sponsor in an eligible occupation, paying at least £41,700/year, or the going rate for the role (whichever is higher), with English at B2 (CEFR) (Australians are exempt as English-majority nationals for the visa, though regulators may differ). Leads to settlement after 5 years. The IHS (£1,035 per year per adult) applies.

Where Australians settle
London is the magnet — finance, media, tech, and the biggest Australian community (Earl's Court's 'Kangaroo Valley' days have spread across the city). Manchester, Edinburgh, and Bristol offer strong job markets at far lower costs. Many Australians base in London first, then use it as a launchpad to travel Europe.
Renting as a new arrival
UK landlords want references and a credit history you won't have yet (average London rent is now about £2,294/month). Expect smaller, older homes than in Australia. Many Australians start in a house-share (SpareRoom.co.uk) before renting solo, offer a few months upfront, or use a UK guarantor service. Right to Rent checks mean you'll need your visa/eVisa to hand.

Most Australians prioritise transport, nightlife, and proximity to other Aussies early on, then shift to value and schools later.
Familiar market, easy fit
Australian qualifications and experience are well recognised, and the work culture is familiar. Finance and professional services, media and creative, tech, healthcare (nurses, doctors — AHPRA-to-UK pathways are well-trodden), construction and trades, and hospitality are all strong. With a UK Ancestry or Youth Mobility visa you can work for anyone without sponsorship.
London ranks #8 of 226 cities in Mercer's 2024 survey — generally pricier than Sydney or Melbourne, with housing the biggest difference. UK salaries can be lower than Australian ones in some fields, so budget carefully for the first year — but proximity to Europe and the experience are the draw. Outside London, costs drop sharply.

Monthly budget — family of 4, outer London
Rent (3-bed): £2,200–3,200/month · Council tax £150–250 · Groceries £500–800 · Transport (travelcards) £300–500 · Utilities + internet £200–350 · Eating out £300–500. Rough total: £3,650–5,600/month. Manchester and the regions cut rent 30–45%.
Open a UK bank account early
App-based banks open with just a passport, no UK address needed — ideal on arrival; high-street banks build credit history for a mortgage later. There's no Australian exit tax, but get advice on your superannuation (you generally can't access it until preservation age, and UK pension transfers are restricted) before making any moves.
Moving money abroad? Don’t lose it in the exchange rate.
Banks and high-street transfer services often bury a 3–5% markup in the exchange rate — on top of any upfront fee, and easy to miss because it hides inside a worse rate. On a large transfer — moving your savings across, or sending money home — that quietly costs hundreds to thousands, for nothing.
The mid-market rate is the one you see on Google. We earn a commission if you open a Wise account through our link — it never affects your rate.
Access to the NHS
Because you pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (£1,035 per year per adult) up front on a Youth Mobility, Skilled Worker, or Ancestry visa, you have full NHS access — GP, hospital, mental health — free at the point of use. The GP is the gatekeeper: register with a local surgery as soon as you have an address. Coming from Medicare, the main adjustments are GP referrals for specialists and longer elective waits; NHS dentists are scarce.
State, grammar, and independent schools
UK state schools are free and catchment-based. Australian children integrate easily — the systems are broadly comparable, though the UK starts formal school a little earlier. Grammar schools (free, selective, 11+ exam) exist in some areas; independent schools charge £15,000–40,000/year. Check Ofsted ratings before choosing an area.
Embedded and easy to find
Around 90,000 Australians live in the UK at any time, heavily concentrated in London — historically Earl's Court, now spread across the southwest and east. Australian-run cafés and brunch spots are everywhere, the Australian rules football (AFL) and cricket scenes are active, and Facebook groups ('Australians in London') buzz with flat-shares, jobs, and Europe-trip plans. Integration is effortless.
Good news: Australia is a 'listed' country for UK pet travel, so the route is straightforward — no rabies blood test or quarantine. The core requirements are a microchip, rabies vaccination, and an animal health certificate.
An ISO-standard microchip before, or at the same time as, the rabies vaccination.
Given at least 21 days before travel (dogs, cats, ferrets), with boosters kept up to date. From a listed country there is no blood test required.
Issued within 10 days of travel by an official vet — this is the key document for entry from a listed country.
Pets must enter via an approved route on an approved transport company. Dogs need tapeworm treatment for some routes — check current rules.
